about nerja

The name "Nerja" is derived from the Arabic word ‘Narixa’ which literally means ‘abundant spring of water’.

Located only 50 km from Málaga, on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain, Nerja is a small coastal town which has retained its authentic Andalucian charm.

With many local beaches and easily accessibly coves, Nerja sits below rolling hills covered with almond and olive trees. Once a sleepy fishing village, unlike many other towns on the Costa del Sol Nerja’s has kept its traditions. Whilst it has grown over the last few years as a tourist destination, the old town is filled with narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed houses.
The famous ‘Balcon de Europa’ lies at the heart of the town, a beautiful palm tree-lined promenade built along the edge of a cliff with panoramic views of the Mediterranean and Nerja's nine sandy beaches stretching over 16 kilometres. In addition to locals taking an evening stroll, artists and musicians can be found there most days.

Beautiful mountains offer a stunning backdrop to Nerja. If you enjoy walking you will find many trails in the nearby Sierra de Almijara and Sierra Tejeda ranges or in the local nature reserves. Whitewashed Pueblos, little Spanish villages, such as Frigiliana and Competa, are great to potter around. You can drive to the historic cities of Ronda or Granada – only an hour or two’s drive from Nerja, visit the historic Nerja Caves or walk five minutes down to Burriana beach and relax on a sunbed with a good book. The crystal clear waters in the areas make it ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving.
